[Halld] Hall D staff changes

As David’s new supervisor I should add a few words to those that David has written.

When Chip Watson retired early last month the lab had need for a new head of Scientific Computing. I applied for the position and yesterday was my first day in the new role. For me personally not a huge change since I was already doing much of the work as Chip transitioned towards retirement. Previously the Scientific Computing group had a focus that was weighted towards theory computing. My stepping into the department leader role partly rebalances that towards experimental nuclear physics. One thing that we have been considering for many years now was consolidating some of the software related functions into one group. With the reorganization of scientific computing this has been realized.

David’s has described the mission of his new group. The current group members are:

            David Lawrence
            Vardan Gyuryan
            Carl Timmer
            Thomas Britton
            Nathan Brei

As you can see, four members are physicists who worked extensively on software as members of the physics division. I think this group is composed of talented people who can be a useful resource for the science program at the lab. Putting them together in the same group will hopefully provide an environment out of which many good things will come. Over the coming days and weeks we will be looking at existing commitments and refining the role of the group. If you have any questions please feel free to email me or walk in and chat.

            Best regards to all,
                        Graham

Hi All,

Thank you all for your kind words and congratulations. Just to give a little more information:

I will be the lead for the new EPSCI = Experimental Physics Software and Computing Infrastructure group.
We are in the IT division, but will contain a mixture of physicists and computer scientists. The primary mission
will be to support the 12 GeV science program at JLab. We will primarily focus on bringing new software and
computing technologies to the experimental halls. This will only work if we remain deeply connected with the
those programs. Thomas Britton and I are both in the EPSCI group and will continue to be involved as active
GlueX collaboration members. While many of my operations duties will be taken over by other Hall-D staff,
you have not gotten rid of me yet!

Regards,
-David

There are two announcements:

David Lawrence has left the Hall D group and has accepted a new position in the IT department at JLab.
We will miss him. Fortunately, he will be close enough to provide us with some help and insights. Let us thank him for his long service to the GlueX experiment and to Hall D and wish him all the best in his new endeavor!

There are two new staff scientist positions in the group.

One position has just been filled. I am happy to announce that Alexander Austregesilo has accepted the offer and will formally change his hat in a month! There is no need to introduce him - we all have known Alexander for several years!

The paperwork for the other position is in progress at the HR. I hope an offer will be sent shortly.

Best regards,
Eugene
