A further update on the weekend's progress; no major issues with beam delivery or data taking. We have completed our intended runs on the Be target at 100 nA, and have now dropped to 50 nA. Some trigger studies will take place this afternoon, then we'll continue at 50 nA until morning. An issue was noted overnight with the FCAL timing constants, but this has been resolved. If you are working on a subsystem in this way, especially at evenings or weekends, please make a dedicated logbook entry and communicate what you're doing/have done to the shift crew, in case your actions have unintended consequences. It's much more helpful if, for example, the RC gets an early morning phone call with information on what has happened since everything was last running smoothly, in order to try to get an idea of the problem, rather than a generic "there's something wrong with system X".
There have been a couple of issues for some remote shifters establishing connections; it appears the recent change of the super-secret hdops password has been inadequately communicated. As I am merely a guest of the hall this week, I shan't communicate this openly, ask your local experts if in doubt. Furthermore, I suggest all upcoming remote shift takers make sure they can sign into the VNC session well ahead of time. Just because something worked last time you took a block of remote shifts doesn't automatically mean it will work this time. Your current RC has never had reason to sign into a remote Hall D shift, so don't call looking for me to set this up or debug your connection (do let me know, at a reasonable hour, that you've been unable to connect though, so I can pass this information on to the PDL and make sure shifts are adequately covered).
It has also been noted that some shift takers are not arriving in time for the start of their shifts. 4am/10am/4pm/10pm means arrive BEFORE the hour to hand over to your successors, not after. Being a little bit late as a one off isn't great, but it is tolerable. Being consistently late every shift is just plain rude to your collaborators.
For those of you interested in having a meeting on the Labor Day holiday, I'll be in the counting room and will open the usual Hall D run planning meeting on zoom at the one-off special time of 9.30 am. Here we'll discuss plans to ramp down the magnet ahead of the Wednesday target change, what special runs we might want to take during that ramp-down and what our plans are for runs with zero magnetic field. If you can join us, great, if not, have an enjoyable Labor Day.
Cheers,
Your Friendly Neighbourhood RC
