May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month - a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands. Home to 48 countries, Asia is the largest and most populous continent in the world with 60 percent of the world's population living there. During this month, we highlight the history, heritage, and contributions of Asian Pacific American communities. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. Today, there are over 20 million people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent who live in the United States totaling about 6% of the U.S. population, representing a wealth and diversity of cultures and experiences within the United States.

[cid:image006.png at 01D85F9E.68DF0F30]Mental Health Awareness Month
Nearly 450 million people worldwide are currently living with a mental health condition, yet nearly two thirds of people with a known condition forego seeking treatment. The stigma around mental health and treatment has long existed, even though this has started to change due to increased education and awareness. Still, people hesitate to seek help or even talk about it with their loved ones for fear of being judged and face unnecessary backlash. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people ages 10 to 34, according to the CDC with the pandemic making it worse for many. One in five reported that the pandemic had a significant negative impact on their mental health.

National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) is celebrated every May and is a declaration that encourages U.S. citizens to observe the month in a symbol of unity. NMAM honors current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who have died in the pursuit of freedom. May is characterized by six national observances highlighting the contributions of those who have served.
Did you know we have a Veteran Mentoring Program at JLab? This program was launched last year on Veterans Day and was designed to help our veterans who are transitioning out from the military to adjust to civilian work life by partnering with a JLab team member.

[Older Americans Month, Age My Way: May 2022]National Older Americans Month
When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as "Senior Citizens Month," the prelude to "Older Americans Month." Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs, and other such activities.
