ASIAN AMERICAN PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH
May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month - a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands. Home to 48 countries, Asia is the largest and most populous continent in the world, with 60% of the world's population living there. The month highlights the history, heritage and contributions of Asian Pacific American communities. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States on May 7, 1843, as well as to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. Today, there are more than 20 million people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent who live in the U.S., totaling about 6% of the U.S. population and representing a wealth and diversity of cultures and experiences. New Webinar from JLab Weekly highlighting Mental Health Awareness Month, please Save-the-Date!
CHECKING IN ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH - MAY 18
The global pandemic has made the last two years tough on almost everyone. Isolation, stress and uncertainty can all greatly impact a person's mental health. As the lab recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month, Jefferson Science Associates and the staff from the Optima Employee Assistance Program (EAP) invite you to bring your lunch for an educational "lunch and learn" seminar. The virtual session will be held on Wednesday, May 18 at noon. The event will cover several critical topics related to mental health and emotional well-being, with the goal of providing lab staff with the necessary resources to maintain their resilience and overall well-being. The training will be facilitated by an Optima EAP certified healthcare clinician.
