Hi,
Being one of the people involved in this geometric kerfuffle I'm really enjoying the discussion about the rules of golf.
It's a good topic, especially since it seems to be dusting off a number of interpretations.
Maybe there's a top-5 list of handy rules we encounter more others worth circulating...
Joe

Food for thought,
We all have the ability to make mistakes playing golf.
"No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying."

Folks,
Two more questions and then I will shutup...
a) Can you guys tell I love talking about the rules of golf?
b) Can you guys tell I am retired and have too much time on my hands?

Earl,
I should add...the relief under the various rules for various situations often have common elements, so the descriptions of the relief methods you posted are useful when thinking about relief generally.
....anyone remember Rolaids? 😉

My understanding is that an unplayable ball, a ball lost in a hazard, and a lost ball are all controlled by different USGA rules. In particular, an unplayable ball is a ball you found, you look at where it is sitting, it is in-bounds, and you say to yourself "no way should I try to hit that ball" for any number of possible reasons. Since you found it, well, it ain't lost.

FYI,
Per USGA, relief for unplayable ball in general area. (1) We do not take stroke & distance into account.
We should use (2) or (3) as options.

Per USGA, Back-on-the-Line Relief:

[cid:ii_1965fc36725cb971f164]

I hope this helps.

Folks,
There was a lot of discussion today about this rule. Here is the quote from the league rules:
"For any lost ball or ball hit out of bounds, you must drop a ball no more
than two club lengths from the out of bounds spot or location the ball is
determined lost. You must take a 1-stroke penalty. DO NOT go back to
the original spot to hit again and DO NOT go back as far as you want to
choose a nice spot to drop."
