Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce a Virtual Software Carpentry Workshop to teach fundamental research computing skills 13-15 December, 2021 (CERN/Zurich Time Zone). The indico page to register is here: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1097111/
Registration opens Monday Dec 3. There is a limit of the registration to 60 persons (registration is moderated but will be a first-come basis unless large experimental imbalances are identified.
It is jointly organized by the Hep Software Foundation (HSF, https://hepsoftwarefoundation.org/) and IRIS-HEP (https://iris-hep.org/).
The three day period will cover the fundamentals of:
1. Unix (e.g. shell, bash and scripting);
2. Git and Github – how to version control your code
3. Python – fundamentals of using the Python language, Jupyter Notebooks
4. Python for analysis – how to combine Python with ROOT to start analyzing data
The training is aimed at those who are new to HEP and desiring a fast-track to competency with software fundamentals, as well the non-expert self-taught who wish to ensure not have gaps in their knowledge.
The first two days are covered by The Carpentries (https://carpentries.org<https://carpentries.org/>). The third day will be taught by tutors who are experts in HEP software. The interactive hands-on sessions led by the tutor will be supported by a number of helpers to ensure all participants are able to follow and understand the material.
The training is virtual via zoom. All participants are expected to attend the whole workshop.
No payment is required for attending this event.
