OPERATION AND OUTLOOK TO FUTURE DETECTORS"*

*_ABSTRACT_*
The superconducting magnet system of the ATLAS Detector at the Large
Hadron Collider at CERN has four magnets, a Barrel Toroid, two End-Cap
Toroids and a Central Solenoid. It provides the magnetic field for the
muon- and inner detectors, respectively.
The huge Barrel Toroid with outer dimensions of 25 m length and 20 m
diameter is an assembly of eight racetrack coils. The coils are would
with an aluminum stabilized NbTi conductor and operate at 20.5 kA and
3.9 T peak magnetic field in the windings. The coils, in total 370 tons
of cold mass, are conduction cooled at 4.8 K by circulating forced flow
helium in cooling tubes attached to the cold mass. The two End-Cap
Toroids are smaller sized, still 11 m in diameter and 5 m in height. The
Central Solenoid has dimensions of 2.4 m diameter and 5.7 m length. The
system stored energy is 1.6 GJ.
After the successful on-surface tests the magnets were installed in the
ATLAS cavern 100 m underground. The Magnets were successfully charged to
full field and since Sep 2009 we are in running and data taking condition.
Test results of this complex and unique magnet system and some of the
lessons learnt are reported. Finally an outlook to the next generation
of magnets for future detectors is presented.
