Exploring the Nature of Matter via Electron Scattering
Experiments at JLab

Abstract:

One long-standing question in nuclear physics is to understand how quarks and gluons make up protons, neutrons, and ultimately, atomic nuclei. The strong interaction between quarks and gluons is governed by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Its principles influence everything from the structure of matter at the smallest scales to the dynamics of nuclear processes and the early universe. Electron scattering is a unique tool for probing the internal structure of target nuclei. It enables access to different Q2 regimes through virtual photon exchange, which is crucial for understanding the in- ternal dynamics of the strong interaction, particularly in the non-perturbative regime. In this seminar, I will discuss the precision measurements on parity-violating electron scattering asymmetry carried out and planned at Hall A. These measurements provide access to determining the neutron skin thickness of 208Pb and 48Ca while also offering insights for the search for new physics. Additionally, I will cover the proposed Solenoidal Large Intensity Device (SoLID) and its scientific program. SoLID is a spectrometer de- signed to fully exploit the 12 GeV energy upgrade at JLab. It is notable worldwide for its unique combination of large acceptance and high luminosity (1037 − 1039/cm2/s).
