The Real James Bond: Sidney Reilly and the Origins of Modern Espionage
*Edward Bruce Held*
*Director, Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence*
*U.S. Department of Energy *
*
ABSTRACT*
Sidney Reilly was the true-life model for the fictional super-spy James
Bond. But Bond's espionage exploits pale in comparison to Reilly's
actual exploits. While Bond lives on, Reilly's adventures ended with a
Soviet bullet in a forest near Moscow in 1925.
Guest speaker Bruce Held is responsible for all intelligence and
counterintelligence activities throughout the DOE complex, including
over 30 intelligence and counterintelligence offices nationwide. The
office protects vital national security information and technologies,
and provides scientific and technical expertise to the U.S. government
to respond to foreign intelligence, terrorist, and cyber threats, and to
solve technical problems associated with a wide range of national
security issues.
Held holds a master's degree in monetary theory from the London School
of Economics and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of
Minnesota. He speaks and reads Japanese, French, and Mandarin, and is
the author of a number of articles and books on intelligence,
counterintelligence and the history of espionage.
