The weather forecast for today, June 23, calls for daytime highs approaching 100 or more degrees Fahrenheit, with a heat index possibly exceeding 105º F, for much of eastern Virginia. These are potentially dangerous conditions, and the National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for today. Please use caution if working outdoors, in areas without air conditioning or if conducting heavy work. If a supervisor has a particular work concern, they can request a localized heat stress assessment by calling Dick Owen at x6381.
Peak temperatures and heat index readings will run from 1-5 p.m. each day. Stay indoors with air conditioning whenever feasible. If working outdoors or in areas not air conditioned:
-- Plan adequate rest breaks,
-- Drink plenty of water. Water and flavor packets are available in the stockroom. Thirst lags behind dehydration. Drink more than your sense of thirst indicates.
If you engage in lunchtime sports activities (hockey, walking, bicycling, etc.), reduce or cease your activity level and stay well hydrated.
If you feel ill or begin to experience heat stress symptoms, please contact Occupational Medicine promptly at x7539.
