Mike, Adam,

I am taking this stoppage to affect all work centers with the exception of the ongoing work in the LERF.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks,
Tony

Subject: [EXTERNAL] LCLS-II-HE: Work Pause on Cryomodule Production at JLab and FNAL

Dear Tug and Mike,

I am writing to inform you that I have declared a work pause on cryomodule assembly lines at both JLab and FNAL, effective immediately. This work pause does not impact cryomodules that are currently undergoing testing at LERF (JLab) or CMTF (FNAL).

Please ensure that before pausing work, all workstations are put in a safe condition. Please follow the safety procedures that are specific to your laboratory/workstation.

I am declaring this work pause because we have had four cryomodules that have required rework in the past few months:

  *   F26 - chipped ceramic
  *   F29 - beamline bellows damage
  * J22 - vacuum leak - beamline and possible He process line (although not confirmed at CMTS)
  * J23 - required warm-up while testing at LERF to mechanically repair a few components identified during the 2K testing at LERF - thermal cycle and retest required.

I believe that a work pause and a workshop are necessary to discuss the common themes and share the experiences from both production lines that have emerged from these issues. I have charged John Hogan to organize a one-day workshop with both partner labs and the SLAC team to come together, discuss the issues, and collectively find a path forward. I am strongly encouraging in-person attendance for this meeting, as it will allow for more productive and collaborative discussions. However, if necessary, a Zoom link will be made available for those who are unable to attend in person.

The work pause will remain in effect until the workshop has been held and a plan has been developed to address the root causes of the rework issues.

I understand that this work pause will be disruptive, but I believe it is necessary to ensure the quality and reliability of our cryomodule production.

Sincerely,

Fernanda G. Garcia
