Dear all,

Here is an abstract that Jonathan prepared and wishes to submit at the
HEP2011 conference that
will be hold in Grenoble in july. Jonathan's status at that period is
not yet settled but it would
happen right after his defense.
Please send me comments and questions by wednesday next week.

Thanks, Eric

-------------- Proposed abstract -----------

The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons (PEPPo) experiment,
planned at Jefferson Lab to
demonstrate the transfer of polarization from a low energy (<10 MeV)
electron beam to positrons
via Bremsstrahlung and pair creation in a single target, is discussed.

Positron production in particle accelerators widely relies on the
creation of electron-positron
pairs, however, if the incident high energy particle (photon or lepton)
is polarized then the resultant
products will carry some portion of the polarization. Indeed, this
approach has been successfully
tested using polarized photons created with a multi-GeV electron
accelerator to generate positrons
with polarization >80%. Alternatively, an incident polarized electron
beam should offer the same
potential.Although pair creation yield suffers at low energy, recent
advances of spin polarized
electron sources at Jefferson Lab to sustain milliampere polarized
electron beams suggests that a
polarized positron source based upon a low energy <10 MeV polarized
electron beam may
be attractive in some applications.Further, a successful demonstration
of this technique
would provide useful information to potentially cast a similar positron
source using an even
higher electron beam energy (100-500 MeV).

An overview of the physics case, design simulation and a description of
the PEPPo experiment
will be presented.
