As a community of cyclists, I think we can benefit from the introspection
prompted by the appended narrative. For some of us the initial exhalation
of learning to ride a bicycle as a child has never lost its influence. We
go out on the road understanding the environment and challenge confronting
us, and hope that the lessons we've acquired, some the hard way, will help
us down the road.for the next ride. Be safe out there.

Subject: Memory of Steve Kane
I was reading the current issue of Bicycling Magazine and came across this
article that so clearly brought to mind Steve and his accident. I offer it
up in memory of Steve.
"I ride toward home, to the finish of just one more ride of a year of them,
every one of which hosted or caused some event, some that never mattered in
any sense, and some that seemed to but we never knew for sure, and some that
broke us, and some that fixed what had broken, just like any year on a bike,
just like every year on a bike, when each ride we take can be the start or
the end of who we are."
Quote from article "Just Another Year" By Bill Strickland in December 2012
issue of Bicycling Magazine.

Subject: Sad News
It is with deep sadness that I must inform you that Steve Kane was hit by an
automobile while bike riding offsite yesterday, and was fatally injured.
Police have notified Steve's family, and I held a meeting this morning to
notify his coworkers. We will be reaching out to Steve's family later today
to offer our help and will obtain information regarding arrangements.
Steve dedicated his professional life to making the Laboratory a safer
place. A tragic loss.
