Ed:
I second Chris' advise. I, and my husband, have been using this type of
clip, on both our road and mountain bikes, for years (+20 now). Found
that it avoids having to have two pairs of shoes, or changing the cleat
everytime. We have never had an issue with mud or goop, and the shoes
don't make that clicking sound when you are walking around at the
"after-party."
Good Luck,
mj

The shimano shoe and cleat setup is good for walking around, pedal and cleat are durable unlike some brands. The only con maybe not enough mud clearance in the pedal compared to some other brands like Crank Brothers. I've been using a Shimano setup for cyclocross racing for 3 seasons now, and have no issues.

I ride for exercise to keep my legs in shape for alpine skiing, typically 10-12 miles at a time on roads and sidewalks and want to add the “uplift” leg resistance that pedal clips provide.
