                   SHMS-HMS Users Group Newsletter #4
                   ----------------------------------
                             December 2009

Monte Carlo
-----------
Users planning to submit SHMS proposals to PAC35 should take note that Tanja
Horn has recently posted an updated version of the SHMS single arm Monte Carlo
at:
    http://www.jlab.org/Hall-C/upgrade/MC.html

The previously available version included the SHMS Bender magnet but only with
3.5 msr instead of 5 msr solid angle and so underestimated the kinematical
coverage. For further information, please contact Tanja Horn at hornt at jlab.org.

Also please note that the total beam current available for Hall C and Hall A
together will be 85 micro-amps (11 GeV power equivalent).

PAC35
-----
If you are preparing a SHMS proposal for PAC35, please let Steve Wood
(saw at jlab.org) know of your preparations. Please indicate if the information
provided should be kept confidential and if you would like to present the
proposal (dry-run) at the Hall C Workshop on January 22-23.

SHMS Project Update
-------------------
* Q1: vendor is progressing on schedule.
* Horizontal Bender: contract negotiations still in progress.
* Q2,Q3,Dipole: bid packages are being restructured for reissue.
* Magnet power supplies: bids coming in now.
* Shield House: A realistic plan for the shield house materials is in place and
the details are being worked on now.
* Cryogenic control / reservoirs (for magnets) -- award contract soon.
* A test cut of SOS concrete, to aid in planning its removal, is scheduled in
   January.

New Hall C Wiki
---------------
- The new Hall C wiki is available at:
     https://hallcweb.jlab.org/wiki/
Content will be added over time. We hope this will be a particularly useful
bulletin board for SHMS working groups (e.g. commissioning, software, etc.)

Analysis Software
-----------------
There is currently no data analysis code which includes the SHMS. A discussion
on updating the existing Fortran engine, as well as creating a new C++/Root
based analysis code, is planned for the January Hall C Workshop.

If you are interested in potentially contributing to C++/Root based analysis
code for Hall C, please contact John Arrington (johna at anl.gov) for more
information.

JLab User's Group
-----------------
The next meeting of the JLab User's Group Board is on Dec 11. If SHMS users
have any 12 GeV issues they want raised, please contact any Zein-Eddine Meziani
or any of the other board members. The membership of the JLab User's Board is
listed at:
    http://www.jlab.org/user_resources/usergroup/board/

Upcoming Events
---------------
SHMS Detector Working Group Meeting - January 21, 2010.
Hall C Winter Workshop - January 22-23, 2010.
PAC35 - January 25-29, 2010.
