Subject: COVID-19 Update
ORNL case stats, as of Wednesday, Nov. 4
Total positive: 194
Total active: 77
More than 20,287 tests administered
200-plus staff in quarantine
2,400-plus on campus last week
The positive rate in on-site testing is <1% (for comparison, the local community is 11.8%)
What is the lab’s COVID-19 guidance for the holidays?
Some staff members are wondering whether they will be required to quarantine before returning to campus after holiday travel or family gatherings with out-of-town guests. The COVID-19 Leadership Team is working on a practical and consistent approach that will protect the health and safety of our staff while sustaining lab operations. Details will be forthcoming.
Should we hold in-person meetings at all?
To date, 40 staff members are believed to have been exposed to the virus from a co-worker on campus—several via in-person meetings, eating lunch together, or riding in vehicles together. You can print the attached flyer<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ornl.sharepoint.com_-3Ab-3A_r_sites_ldoffice_Shared-2520Documents_LowRiskMeetingsFlyer.pdf-3Fcsf-3D1-26web-3D1-26e-3DWI5ayR&d=DwMFAg&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=JiFk5MoBASreCKSlAFQzxw&m=VfuPNGLRYnK4k_x1SJSRGwhcULvlDhG9TiRGt4cQEHU&s=E04VDk6c9abVhMoxgB4FQ5BMxjue26XbQ7DwtUL0Jt8&e=> to encourage safe meetings that ensure at least six feet of distance between individuals, even when everyone is wearing face coverings. CDC guidelines specify that people who have been within six feet of a person with COVID-19 for at least 15 minutes over the course of a day are to be placed in quarantine for 14 days, due to the ease by which the virus spreads from person to person.
Make zero contacts your goal.
Individuals can catch the virus despite their best efforts. When that happens, contact tracing begins. Among the questions ORNL medical staff members will ask:
* Where have you been? (such as buildings, rooms, vehicles, or other work areas)
* Who has been within six feet of you for a total of 15 minutes in a given day? (these individuals are considered to be contacts even if face coverings are worn)
* Where did you likely contract the virus? (includes contact with known or suspected COVID-19-positive individuals, activities, and locations, on site or off site)
Ideally, the answers to these questions will identify no additional individuals who are at risk of infection or who need to be quarantined.
Minimize COVID-19 spread within your home.
Interaction with family members, the primary cause of exposure among infected staff, is unavoidable for many, particularly those who have children and dependent adults living in their households. If someone with whom you reside becomes sick, consider guidance<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.cdc.gov_coronavirus_2019-2Dncov_if-2Dyou-2Dare-2Dsick_care-2Dfor-2Dsomeone.html&d=DwMFAg&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=JiFk5MoBASreCKSlAFQzxw&m=VfuPNGLRYnK4k_x1SJSRGwhcULvlDhG9TiRGt4cQEHU&s=4OR2BbBn5Zx9lcNrWMXTOCoMOkaOE5zNJBE3soVHWQo&e=> provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how to care for them while protecting yourself and others in your home from infection.
Plan for the worst and be better prepared.
If your household hasn’t been directly affected by COVID-19, consider developing a “crisis” plan now in case you or others you count on are unable to carry out essential household activities due to being infected or in quarantine.
