PPU January metrics were reviewed this week, and overall progress is quite good with a CPI of 1.01 and SPI of 0.98 as we approach the half-way mark of scope complete. The project office is formulating the process for contingency fund spending and also collecting input for contingency spending applications.

Great news this week in the superconducting RF area with the successful testing of a 4th helium vessel jacketed cavity. This paves the way to start the first cryomodule string assembly. In the RF area the LLRF effort is proceeding well with component procurements on schedule and planning for a possible test of the new system to control an installed cavity during beam study periods later this spring. In the Ring area we are examining advice from last week’s beam power limiting system and are re-assessing when to replace the injection dump window with the beam imaging capable PPU upgrade. In first target systems a change request was processed for the molecular sieve upgrades and a procurement readiness review was held for cryogenic moderator ortho-para conversion system equipment. Also, the initial PPU target front body fabrication passed acceptance testing at ORNL, which will provide realization of a cost reduction opportunity. Finally tests in the target development lab indicate no detrimental impact on heat transfer from the stainless-steel vessel due to the presence of the injected gas. Lastly the klystron gallery build out is progressing well, with a target date for substantial completion at the end of this March. Cable pulls and terminations are in full swing now, in addition to the pipe installation, and preparations have begun for equipment testing.

As ORNL begins staff vaccinations, I’m hopeful that a new level of COVID safety will soon be with us. Thanks to all carrying on wherever you may be, at home and/or on site. Have a great weekend - jg
