Please see below for the details.
Cake Seminar
Wednesday, November 16th at 1:00 PM
Raju Venugopalan (BNL)
will discuss "A big role for a phase: The chiral anomaly and sphaleron transitions in polarized deeply inelastic scattering"
Abstract:
We argue that the physics underlying topological mass generation in QCD (the UA(1) problem) is
also the physics that explains the helicity of the proton. Just as for the famous case of pi0 -> 2 photons,
a key role is played by a phase in the Dirac determinant required for the consistency of the theory. We suggest that measurements of polarized
structure functions at an Electron-Ion Collider can uncover first evidence for topological "sphaleron-like" transitions in nature.
Best,
Caroline, Colin, & Patrick
