MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
May 22, 2017
SUBJECT: JLab Acting Accelerator AD Accepts Position at Oak Ridge National
Laboratory
I would like to share with you that Fulvia Pilat has accepted a position
as the new director of the Research Accelerator Division in the Neutron
Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
For the last seven years at Jefferson Lab, Fulvia has served as deputy AD
for Accelerators while simultaneously holding the position of Accelerator
program director for the Jefferson Lab Electron-Ion Collider initiative
since 2014. Fulvia joined the laboratory during the 12 GeV upgrade of the
accelerator, and she immediately set to work to ensure that all
accelerator installation activities were smoothly integrated and to ensure
that testing and commissioning activities did not adversely affect the
ongoing experimental program. She also led the detailed design effort of
the Jefferson Lab electron-ion collider, applying her expertise in
accelerator physics, in-depth grasp of engineering and cost consequences
of technical choices with her ability in forging strong collaborations to
the benefit of the project.
Fulvia has made lasting contributions to the international accelerator
physics community, as well. She has served as the Chair of APS Division of
Particles and Beams; she is a member of the High Energy Physics Advisory
Panel; and she was the Chair of the Local Organizing Committee of the 2015
International Particle Accelerator Conference in Richmond, VA.
She will be departing the laboratory to join Oak Ridge National
Laboratory's Neutron Sciences Directorate. The directorate manages and
operates the Spallation Neutron Source, for which Jefferson Lab
scientists, engineers and technicians provided 23 cryomodules and the
cryogenics plant in the early 2000s.
Fulvia's appointment is expected to start this fall. In the meantime, she
will continue to serve as acting associate director for Accelerator
Operations, Research and Development as the search continues for Jefferson
Lab's next Accelerator AD. Please join me in thanking Fulvia for her
service to the laboratory, and in wishing her all the best at her new
position at our sister lab.
