[Clas12_rich] network on Debian OS for RICH collaborators

Dear Kelvin,

I do not understand why the change in the network capability of the Debian PC from when we initially asked in May. This is impacting our work and the work of collaborators visiting from Italy and leaving on August 8th. Is there any solution so we can have the Debian PC on some sort of network?

Best regards,
Tyler

Also, any one else on the RICH mailing list, is there anything else that can be done to help with this network issue.

Tyler,

When reading your CCPR, I assumed that the collaborators would be using University owned systems and not JLab
equipment. If this is the case, then I'll talk to Jonathan and have him move them onto the Guest network. If they are
using JLab owned equipment, however, Jonathan is correct and it is required to be on the internal networks.

Dear Kelvin,

I submitted a CCPR in May (it is attached below) regarding installing Debian Linux OS on to a PC for the INFN collaborators for the RICH detector. Your reply was that we could have that PC with Debian OS as long as it was on the guest network.

Today, we installed Debian on the computer with MAC address 64-00-6A-82-72-D4 and called the computer center help desk in order to have it promptly switched to the guest network, as you said. We got a call back from Johnathan Trexler stating that the system could not be on the guest network and also that it could not even have Debian installed on it. Could this PC be put on the guest network so the collaborators can use the PC. This is imperative to have a network connection to install the software for the tests the collaborators need to run. We would need the network connection as soon as possible because the collaborators are leaving next Monday, August 8.

Best regards,
Tyler Lemon

Tyler,

Sorry to take so long to get back to you, but I was out of town all
last week and am just now seeing this request. Due to security and
policy restrictions, any system that has an IP address on our internal
network (other than the guest network) must run one of our approved
OSes and should be built from one of our builds. Our current approved
Linux OSes are Redhat Enterprise Linux 5, 6, and 7. If they want to
run Debian Linux, the systems will need to be registered on teh guest
network. They can then use ssh to login through hallgw.jlab.org to
access any of the Hall resources. Hope this helps.

Request:
There are collaborators for the RICH detector that want to use Debian
Linux OS for their testing. Will the computers be able to access the
JLAB network? Could we get an exception to allow them to access the
JLAB network? Please let me know. Thanks.
