ACCELERATOR SCIENCE / EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
The CEBAF Accelerator had another great week for beam delivery, and it set a new record for beam availability in the 12 GeV Era over the weekend, with 84.1 percent availability April 20 -23. The graphic shows beam current for the same period.
THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
The very small mass of the up and down quarks, in the order of 3 to 6 MeV, gives a shift of the nucleon mass by more than 55 MeV, as determined phenomenologically from analyses of pion-nucleon scattering. This has given rise to longstanding theoretical puzzles that are studied in a new paper using effective chiral theory combined with an expansion in 1/N_c, where N_c is the number of colors. Analyzing baryon masses, including those of hyperons, and results from lattice QCD, the analysis finds that quark masses contribute 69 \pm 10 MeV to the nucleon mass, in agreement within errors with the phenomenological determinations..

ESH&Q
Schneider Electric Recalls Square D Safety Switches Due to Electrical Shock Hazard
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recently posted a recall notice for Square D brand General Duty 30 & 60A, 120/240-volt, 2-phase and 3-phase NEMA 3R Safety Switches. The power can stay on when the safety switch handle is in the “OFF” position, posing an electrical shock or electrocution hazard to consumers. Todd Kujawa, Jefferson Lab’s Electrical Safety Engineer, has asked that JSA employees inspect their electrical boxes to determine if they are included in this recall and should be replaced. Authorized Schneider Electric distributors include Home Depot, Lowe’s, original equipment manufacturers and others stores nationwide and online from January 2014 through January 2018 for between $40 and $500. For more information and a picture of the “Square D Safety Switch,” see the link .

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
12 GeV Dedication Event Set for May 2
The Department of Energy and Jefferson Science Associates, LLC, are commemorating the completion of the recent upgrade with the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV Upgrade: A New Era of Science Dedication Event on Wednesday, May 2 . The event will feature a tour for notable participants and a ceremony and reception to be held in CEBAF Center, 2:30- 5 p.m. DOE's Undersecretary for Science, the Honorable Paul Dabbar, will be the keynote speaker. While in-person attendance will be by ticket holders only, the event will be live-streamed for Jefferson Lab staff and Users via the events page hosted on YouTube, and the link will shared via email prior to start of the event.

Reminder: D&I Webinar Offered Tomorrow
Jefferson Lab’s Diversity & Inclusion Council is now offering free webinars on a variety of current workplace topics relevant to working in academic and research environments. The next webinar, “Four Keys to Employee Engagement – What Matters & What Doesn’t,” will be offered Thursday, April 26 , in CEBAF Center room L102 at 1 p.m. Seminars vary in length from one hour to an hour and a half. No reservations are required. A schedule of seminar topics can be found in the full memo .

Pre-SAD Safety Meeting Set for May 3
The Pre-SAD meeting for the next major Scheduled Accelerator Down will be held May 3 at 9:30 a.m. in the CEBAF Center auditorium. This meeting is mandatory for those individuals required to work behind the fence during the SAD. The 1.5-hour-long meeting will cover expected conditions in work areas at the start of the SAD, major work center priorities and challenges, best practices for coordinating highly technical work amongst different groups, and a review of potential safety items, as well as reinforcement of JSA employee responsibility in practicing the principles of Integrated Safety Management at Jefferson Lab.

Last Chance: LDRD Program Proposals
If you are planning to submit a proposal for the Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program, the due date for formal proposals is April 29 . For more information, see the full memo here .

Last Chance to Register for Run-A-Round!
The 33rd Annual Jefferson Lab Run-A-Round will be held Tuesday, May 1 , 3-6 p.m. All members of the Jefferson Lab community are invited to participate, including staff, Users, students and full-time contractors, as well as immediate family members. To be eligible for awards, runners and walkers must register online before 5 p.m. on Monday, April 30 . Participants may pick up race bibs on Tuesday, May 1 , between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the CEBAF Center lobby. For more information, see the full memo .

Volunteers Still Needed for 33rd Annual Run-A-Round
Several critical volunteer spots are still open for before, during and after the event to carry out a variety of tasks. Volunteers will get a free Jefferson Lab T-shirt. Sign up now at the link.

Colloquium on Neutrinos Set for May 9
While neutrinos interact only rarely with matter, there are special cases of these rare interactions that can be detected and studied. Kate Scholberg, Duke University, will present results of the first measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering - a process in which a neutrino scatters off an entire nucleus. “Detecting the Tiny Thump of the Neutrino” will describe the recent measurement of CEvNS carried out at the Spallation Neutron Source, the status and plans of the collaboration’s suite of detectors, and the physics we will learn from the measurements. The colloquium will be held May 9 at 3 p.m. in the CEBAF Center auditorium.

CONTACT
The JLab Weekly provides information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: the Communications Office or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
