Protons Get Zippier in Neutron-Rich Nuclei

Research published in Nature has confirmed that increasing the number of neutrons as compared to protons in the atom’s nucleus increases the average momentum of its protons. The result may have implications for neutron star dynamics. Read more here .

ACCELERATOR OPERATIONS
The summer Scheduled Accelerator Down has now ended. Accelerator Operations has resumed an around-the-clock schedule and is working to bring the CEBAF Accelerator back online for experiments. It's anticipated that beam restoration will be complete by next Wednesday for the start of physics on Aug. 22. To that end, the MCC Weekly Scheduling meetings resume today with the first meeting of this run period at 1:30 p.m. in the MCC Conference Room.

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
A recently developed finite-volume method for three interacting particles has been applied to energy eigenlevels calculated by the NPLQCD collaboration. Using the two-body π+π+ threshold energy shifts as input, the three-π+ threshold energy shift is calculated including a fit of the three-body force to the threshold level from the lattice. This allows excited three-body levels for a physical system to be predicted for the first time.

ESH&Q
Safe + Sound Week
Safe + Sound Week is a nationwide event to raise awareness and understanding of the value of safety and health programs. Effective safety & health programs include management leadership, worker participation and a systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards in the workplace. These programs proactively identify and manage workplace hazards before they cause injury or illness, improving sustainability and the bottom line.

Here at Jefferson Lab, JSA is committed to maintaining effective safety and health programs and to conducting operations in a manner that will provide employees, users, subcontractors, vendors and visitors safe and healthy work conditions. To this end, no activity is considered to be so urgent or important to compromise the standards for safety and health of individuals or environmental protection. To learn more about Jefferson Lab’s health and safety programs, see the ESH&Q website .

Computing
IT Division Maintenance Period Set for Tuesday , Aug. 21, 5-10 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a maintenance period on Tuesday , Aug. 21, 5-10 p.m. During this time, patches will be released to all MIS back-end database servers. All MIS applications will be unavailable while the servers are rebooted to finalize these patch installations. Updates to all Linux and Windows desktops and servers will be released, as well. Overnight, central servers will be rebooted to finalize these updates. During the system reboots, individual services will be unavailable for around 10 minutes. Finally, plan on rebooting your Linux or Windows desktop no later than close of business on Friday, July 20 to finalize the installation of updates on your desktop. If you have any questions or concerns about these updates, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

Jefferson Lab User Account Audit Ends Friday
On Monday, July 16 , the Jefferson Lab IT Division started the computer user account audit. This audit is a critical part of maintaining an appropriate level of cyber security at Jefferson Lab and must be completed by close of business Friday , Aug. 17. If you are a Supervisor or Sponsor of staff, Users or contractors and have not already completed your review of open computer user accounts, please do so as soon as possible. For more information, see the full memo .

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Last Chance: Register for the Symposium in Honor of Hugh Montgomery’s Retirement
There’s still time to register your attendance for the Scientific Symposium: Electrons, Protons, Muons and Antiprotons. This event is being held to honor the retirement of former Jefferson Lab Director, Hugh Montgomery. Registration for the event, as well as an optional tour and reception, is closing soon. For more information and to register, see the event webpage .

Update for Business Travelers: Travel to China and Russia ( 8/15/18 )
The timeline for administrative processing of paperwork for business travel to China has been extended to 10 weeks due to an increase in visa processing time by the Embassy of China. Additionally, business travel to Russia continues to be prohibited. For more information, see the full announcement .

Update: Vehicle Window Broken by Lawn Service in CEBAF Center Parking Lot
Last week, lawn service personnel reported that a vehicle window was broken in the CEBAF Center parking lot by a rock that was flung from equipment operated by the lawn service. An announcement was made via email to the Jefferson Lab community to facilitate locating the owner of the broken window. The vehicle owner was found and is working with the lawn service provider to have the damaged window replaced. This is a great example of a subcontractor taking immediate action and accountability of an issue that occurred while preforming work for the lab. The contractor, as well as the responsible members of Facilities Management & Logistics, are to be commended on their swift action.

Blood Drive Results Are In!
Jefferson Lab donors made a significant contribution to the American Red Cross with the Aug. 10 blood drive! A total of 36 productive pints were collected, exceeding the goal of 30. Johnie Banks, Occupational Medicine, extends a sincere thank you to everyone that participated with this blood drive and congratulates participants on a job well done! Mark your calendars for the next blood drive on Oct. 19.
