Energy Secretary Visits Jefferson Lab

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS 
Many scattering processes between hadrons feature intermediate states possessing non-zero intrinsic spin. As such, it is important to understand the role this non-vanishing spin has on the scattering amplitudes. A new paper presents the first determination of ρπ scattering using lattice QCD, a first-principles numerical approach to solving QCD.

How Does Near-Miss Reporting Prevent Future Events? 
The National Safety Council has determined that, although often overlooked in safety reporting, near-miss incidents often precede loss-producing events. According to most safety organizations, a near-miss is an unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness, or damage – but had the potential to do so. In 1931, American Engineer Herbert William Heinrich wrote that for every 300 near-misses, there will be 29 minor injuries and 1 major injury. This figure, which is in agreement with more recent, in-depth studies, highlights the importance of recognizing and reporting near-miss incidents. Doing so enables a facility to investigate and rectify the situation, proactively and significantly improving worker safety.

This week's photo of the week was taken in May 1996 during the Jefferson Lab Dedication. Hazel O'Leary was the keynote speaker. She was the first African American and first woman to serve as Secretary of Energy, a position she was nominated into by President Bill Clinton in 1993.
