ACCELERATOR/EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
PAC46 Results Available
A meeting of the Jefferson Lab Program Advisory Committee was held last week. PAC46 judged the technical and scientific aspects of six new experiment and run group proposals and provided recommendations. For the first time, the closeout was open for attendance by all members of the lab community. A one-page summary of results has already been posted to the website, and the full report will be posted soon.
THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
In chiral effective field theory, the contact three-nucleon interaction is related to an important term in the axial current responsible for the beta decays of nuclei. By exploiting this relation, a new analysis has constructed a family of three-nucleon interactions by fitting the 3 H beta decay rate and also explored the implications that the resulting models of three-nucleon interactions have on the spectra of light nuclei and the equation of state of neutron matter.
ESH&Q
When to Suspend Work for Safety
Jefferson Lab considers no activity to be so urgent or important that its standards for environment, safety or health may be compromised. Anyone at Jefferson Lab has the right, and the responsibility, to suspend work if a dangerous condition is apparent or appears to be imminent. The process outlined in Jefferson Lab ES&H Manual Chapter 3330 Appendix T1, Suspend Work for Safety Procedure , provides a graded approach that allows a worker, or observer, to suspend or stop work based on the observed hazard and proposed solution. Work can recommence if all parties agree to the solution; or work is stopped if the solution is not readily apparent or all parties do not agree to the solution. If work is stopped, the process for restarting may require additional review and formal approval.
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Register Now for the Scientific Symposium in Honor of Hugh Montgomery’s Retirement
There’s still time to register your attendance for the Scientific Symposium: Electrons, Protons, Muons and Antiprotons. This event is being held to honor the retirement of former Jefferson Lab Director, Hugh Montgomery. Registration for the event, as well as an optional tour and reception, is open until Aug. 15. For more information and to register, see the event webpage .
TIAA-CREF Individual Counseling Sessions Available on Aug. 15
