Jefferson Lab Spotlight: Mark Stapleton

At Jefferson Lab, ingenuity exists at every level. Just ask Mechanical Technician Mark Stapleton, who invented a tool to reduce the downtime required for compressor maintenance. Read more here .

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
The dispersive analysis of the decay η→3π is reviewed and thoroughly updated in a new paper , with the aim of determining the quark m ass ratio ~Q2 = (m2s−m2ud)/(m2d−m2u). R elyin g on a low-energy theo rem that relates the meson masses to the masses of the three lightest quarks, the analysis gives Q = 22.1(7). The result indicates that the current algebra formulae for the meson masses only receive small corrections from higher orders of the chiral expansion, although not all of the recent lattice results are consistent with this conclusion.

ESH&Q
National Preparedness Month: Disaster-Specific Information
In addition to general guidance on disaster preparedness, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, also known as FEMA, offers specific tips on what to do in different disaster conditions. For instance, you can find information about how to prepare yourself and your family for hurricanes , flooding in your area and power outages . Information specific to Jefferson Lab can be found on the Emergency Preparedness webpages .

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS
Disposing of Metals: Excessing Equipment and Scrap Metal Recycling
Before tossing equipment or scrap items, it's important to consider the appropriate process for disposal. Scrap metal items - which may include items such as unusable nuts and bolts, piping scrap and other metal odds and ends - may be recycled. All Jefferson Science Associates personnel who throw out scrap metal are asked to separate the metal out for recycling into the different types (i.e. separating copper, aluminum and steel into the correct bins). If you are unsure of the type of metal, there are magnets attached to the sides of the bins to help. For assistance, you may also call x7348. Equipment items - which may include furniture, chargers, meters and pumps - typically must be properly excessed through Property Management. See the full memo for more information and links.

COMPUTING
IT Division Maintenance Period Set for Tuesday , Sept. 18
The IT Division has scheduled a systems maintenance period from 5-10 p.m. on Tuesday , Sept. 18. During this time, there will be a short interruption to Internet and wireless access while network equipment is updated. In addition, updates to core common user environment software, such as Firefox, will be made to all Windows desktop systems. Patches will also be released to all Windows and Linux systems. There will be short interruptions to central services overnight Tuesday , while central servers are rebooted to finalize patch installation. Finally, plan on rebooting your desktop system no later than 5 p.m. on Friday , Sept. 21, so that your system can fully install all released patches. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

Reminder: Windows 7 End of Life in January 2020
If you have desktop or laptop computer systems with hardware that can only support Windows 7, plan now to replace the systems as soon as possible. In general, all systems older than 2012 should be excessed. Starting in FY19, the IT Division will no longer install Windows 7 on new or existing systems. All builds and rebuilds will be Windows 10 only. All lab-managed systems running Windows 7 after the EOL date, January 2020 , will be blocked from the network. For more information about affected systems and system recommendations, see the full memo .

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Colloquium: What does the Revolution in Artificial Intelligence Mean for Physics?
There is no doubt that there is a revolution going on in machine learning and artificial intelligence, but what does it mean for physics? Is it all hype, or will it transform the way we think about and do physics? In the colloquium, Kyle Cranmer, an associate professor at New York University, will describe machine learning from a physicist's perspective in advocation of the idea of physics-aware machine learning, which involves machine learning techniques imbued with physics knowledge. The event will take place in the CEBAF Center Auditorium on Sept. 19 at 3 p.m.

Publications Refresher Course Offered Sept. 13
The next Publications Refresher Course will take place Thursday , Sept. 13, at 9:30 in TED Bldg. Room 2559. The course includes a demonstration of how to submit and how to review your publications. Bring any questions you may have about this process. If you plan to attend, R.S.V.P. no later than close of business on Wednesday , Sept. 12 to Kim Edwards .

JSA Phased Retirement Program Now Taking Applications
JSA is now offering a Phased Retirement Program to staff members who are within two years of meeting eligibility requirements for JSA's retiree medical program. The program allows employees to gradually transition into retirement by shifting from a full-time to part-time work schedule. For more information about the program, see the full memo .

Update on Local Impacts of Hurricane Florence
Members of Jefferson Lab Leadership and the Emergency Management Team are still monitoring Hurricane Florence and its potential impacts on the lab and will announce any further directives as needed. In addition, several local authorities have made announcements that may impact the lab community, including disruption of Hampton Roads Transit bus, ferry and light rail services , closures at local educational institutions, disruption of services provided by area localities and the opening of storm shelters and high-ground parking areas for residents. Check your home locality's website for further information (many localities have highlighted information relating to Hurricane Florence).

CONTACT
The JLab Weekly provides information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: the Communications Office or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
