Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

In today ’s colloquium, NYU’s Kyle Cranmer will describe machine learning from a physicist's perspective, with emphasis on the idea of physics-aware machine learning. The talk will take place today at 3 p.m. in the CEBAF Center Auditorium.

ACCELERATOR
Work to bring the CEBAF Accelerator online for experiments is now well underway following beam transport difficulties over the summer and a pause for hurricane preparedness activities. Second-pass beam has now been successfully established in the machine. Through the end of the week and into the weekend, operators will continue to spin up beam through all 5.5 passes and complete beam quality checks. It’s expected that the experimental hall counting houses will move to round-the-clock staffing on Friday in preparation for imminent beam delivery to the halls for experiments.

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
The structure of the low-lying baryon spectrum provides information about strongly interacting QCD. A new paper uses Regge phenomenology to study the structure of the spectrum, taking into account the widths of the resonances to obtain insights into missing states and the internal structure of the resonant hadronic spectrum. Some candidates are identified that signal an important component of dynamics beyond the three-constituent quark picture.

Secure Bulk Shredding for Jefferson Lab Business Sensitive Work Documents
To aid in the proper disposal of business sensitive or other restricted-use JSA or Jefferson Lab documents, secure shredding collection boxes are located in CEBAF Center and the Support Service Center. A contracted service, Shred-it, visits the lab monthly, gathers all the materials in the collection boxes and then shreds all the materials. The scheduled visits for the next several months are Oct. 10, Nov. 7 and Dec. 5. For more information, see the full memo .

ESH&Q
2018 Flu Vaccine Now Offered by Appointment or Select Walk-In Dates
Occupational Medicine is now offering Influenza vaccinations to Jefferson Science Associates staff via appointment Sept. 24-28 or via select walk-in dates in October and November. If you would like to schedule an appointment, contact Occupational Medicine at x7539 or x5585. COMPUTING
IT Division Working on Release of macOS 10.14 Mojave
On Monday , Sept. 24, Apple will release macOS 10.14 Mojave. The IT Division is working to support and incorporate this new release into the managed Mac environment as soon as possible. Until then, computer users should not download and install this new OS on Jefferson Lab-owned Mac systems. The IT Division will make another announcement when this new operating system can be supported. If you have any questions or concerns about this announcement, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Admin Manual Update: Staff Accountability Policy Now Available
The Jefferson Lab Administrative Manual has now been updated with a new policy on staff accountability. Administrative Manual Section 103.03 Staff Accountability states that Jefferson Science Associates will maintain a capability to account for all employees in response to official direction from the Department of Energy or as requested by the lab director. This policy applies to actual emergencies or exercises. JSA personnel can review the full policy at the link.

Public Address System Test Set for Thursday
On Sept. 20 at 5:30 p.m., members of the Jefferson Lab Emergency Management Team will conduct the recurring test of the lab’s Public Address (PA) System, the live audible announcement feature that is available through the Cisco phones. No actions are required or expected from members of the lab community with this test. Active calls are automatically put on “hold” and may be re-activated once the announcement has ended. For more information, see the full memo .
