Commercialization, Startups and Venture Capital
In tomorrow ’s colloquium, Patrick Ennis will bring to bear his decades of experience as a Ph.D. physicist, engineer, businessman and venture capitalist on demystifying the road that technology takes toward commercialization, all while highlighting its parallels to physics. The talk will take place in the CEBAF Center Auditorium on Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m.
ACCELERATOR OPERATIONS/EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
Continuous wave beam was established to Hall D over the weekend. During Hall C startup, a kink in the South Linac beamline was discovered, so a maintenance and radiofrequency recovery period was taken on Monday . By Wednesday morning, beam delivery had been established and beam parameter tuning was underway for Halls B and C. In Hall A, target cool down was begun on Tuesday , and the hall began its final preparations to accept beam on target.
THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
The discovery of a sizeable asymmetry in the u¯ and d¯ distributions in the proton was one of the more consequential experimental findings in hadron physics last century. Although widely believed to be related to the fundamental role of chiral symmetry in QCD, a definitive verification of this hypothesis has remained elusive. A novel test of the role of chiral symmetry in generating the sea flavor asymmetry has been proposed by comparing the d¯−u¯ content in the proton with that in the Δ+ baryon, where a significant enhancement is expected around the opening of the Nπ decay channel. Recent developments in lattice QCD suggest a promising way to test this prediction in the near future.

FEMA Schedules Emergency Alert System Test for Wednesday , Oct. 3
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, will conduct through the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on Oct. 3 at approximately 2:20 p.m. The WEA test message will be sent to cell phones that are connected to wireless carriers participating in WEA. The EAS is a national public warning system that provides the President with communications capability to address the nation during a national emergency. For more information on the test, visit the FEMA IPAWS Test webpage .

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Change in Procurement Processes Effective Oct. 1
Starting Oct. 1, changes are being introduced to the purchase requisition software and procurement processes in an effort to improve communication and documentation regarding subcontractor oversight between the Subcontracting Officer Technical Representative (SOTR) and the Subcontracting Officer (SO). The changes will require assignment of a SOTR to all purchase requisitions with “YES” selected for “Will Personnel Be Working On Site?” and approval of the requisition by the appropriate Associate Director. In addition, SOTRs will now complete a formal monthly report for all subcontracts that have a value of $10,000 or greater with work on site required or that are highly complex and require additional documented oversight. For more information, see the full memo .
