Position Summary:*//
The Associate Director for Accelerator Operations, Research and
Development is responsible for:
* all aspects of the safe operation, maintenance and improvement of
the accelerator complex,
* the execution of the accelerator research and development program,
including the operation of test facilities, and
* the successful delivery of project scope within cost and schedule
Responsibilities include the management of the Accelerator Division of
approximately165 staff including 85 scientists and engineers. The
Division operates the 12 GeV Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator
Facility in support of the experimental nuclear physics program and user
community, numbering more than 1500 scientists. In addition the Division
conducts fundamental research and development in the science and
technology of particle beams, utilizing extensive research infrastructure.
Working in concert with other members of laboratory management, the
Associate Director participates in strategic planning, policy formation,
budgeting, and science initiatives. The Associate Director represents
the laboratory with government agencies, the international physics
community, other laboratories, universities, as well as stakeholders.
*Specific Duties and Responsibilities:*
* Direct design, construction, operation, maintenance and improvement
of the accelerator complex to support accelerator operation meeting
established commitments for run-time and accelerator performance.
* Direct accelerator science and technology research and development
activities to develop future facility capabilities and concepts and
to maintain state-of-the-art capabilities at CEBAF.
* Establish strategy and direction for the laboratory’s accelerator
technology capabilities in alignment with strategic plans
established by top Lab management and executive leadership to ensure
that the laboratory is well-positioned to contribute to future
national and international accelerator projects.
* Provide support to the user community to ensure responsiveness to
user needs and overall scientific productivity; collect and report
performance data that demonstrate productivity of operations.
* Represent the laboratory with the national and international
accelerator community.
* Supports the Laboratory Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative
Action goals and programs. Leads Diversity and Inclusion
initiatives within the Division.
* Drive Safety and Environmental Stewardship through all Division
activities
* Drive cost reduction and continuous improvement
Position Requirements
*Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: *
* A deep knowledge of the broad field of accelerator science and
technology along with a vision for the future evolution of the
Division and its mission
* Ability to nurture the efforts of the entire Division and to set a
tone and direction, which will ensure excellence on the world scale.
* Demonstrated excellent leadership and management skills
*Education and Experience:*
* Ph. D. in physics or other relevant field with twenty years of
experience in particle accelerator operation, construction, research
and development.
* At least five years of experience in a senior management position.
* A record of successful management of large scientific research and
development facilities or projects

·Capable of analytic and deductive reasoning
·Ability to organize, prioritize, lead, manage, and complete highly

access work areas
• Ability to work on a computer for extended periods
• Visual capabilities sufficient to use computer workstations, read
documents, and see safety alarms
• Auditory capabilities to hear safety alarms
