Hi Albert,
Just wanted to loop you in with this conversation.
The strain relief collars for the Radiall 52-pin connectors we ordered from CAEN (PO# 20-P1290-0) are not the correct size.
We've reached out to our CAEN sales rep Greg Kibilko to remedy this situation.
He has been incredibly helpful, but perhaps applying a little additional pressure to CAEN would be helpful?
Is there perhaps something you could do to potentially expedite this process with CAEN?
Regards,
Aaron

Hi Aaron,
Before I try to explain, please know that CAEN and I will do everything we possibly can to solve the issue.
The issue revolves around Radiall. They are not an easy company to work with. Even CAEN, a fairly large customer, has some difficulty in getting Radiall to address support issues quickly and efficiently. Almost everything in the CAEN catalog is produced by CAEN, but these connectors are an exception.
I didn't get the impression that getting just the collars replaced would be an easy thing to make happen. I'll push for it again tomorrow morning, but it sounds like Radiall is going to want the failed pieces back before they perform any replacements.
CAEN would be happy to send you the correct screws but they don't have any strain relief collars in-house that seem to match the second batch sent to you. You could send one back and they'll try to match it? If they have one in-hand and they can't match it with a screw they can at least use it as a physical example to present to Radiall to push them to send replacements.
When you apply pressure to me I can apply pressure to CAEN. Give me tomorrow morning to see what other solutions we can offer.
Cheers,
Greg

Hi Greg,
After talking about this more, it was suggested that we either get new strain relief collars sent, or just the screws for the strain relief collars we have currently.
Is it possible to have just the collars sent since there seems to be nothing wrong with the rest of the connector? Or just the screws?
We have no problem looking for new screws, or trying to make due with the current screws we have, work for the four or five connectors we've assembled and terminated already, but CAEN should send us the correct screws for the rest of the connectors.
Let me know what you think, or what is even feasible.
Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Mindy,
Yeah, we kind of see it that way as well. But it's the solution that requires the most work on your end. I'm really sorry about that.
Please let me know how things work out?
Best,
Greg

Greg,
I think the third option would be the simplest. The screws are long enough, so I'll only need to get the nuts to match.

Subject: Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: [Dsg-hallc_nps] Radiall connector
Hi Mindy and all,
Thank you for checking. We'd hoped that this would be an obvious indicator which we could show to Radiall to prove that there was a problem with a specific batch. At this point we have a couple of options available to us.
1) You can send back to the CAEN Tech office in Staten Island the 20 connectors which are faulty. We'll ship them back to Italy and CAEN will take the issue up with Radiall and begin working to get you replacements. The downside to this solution is time. CAEN doesn't have a stock of the connectors they can send you to replace the faulty ones. We'll have to wait for more to be shipped from Radiall and lead times have been long.
2) You could ship back one connector to the Staten Island office. CAEN will try to find screws that fit the strain relief collar. Assuming they do, they'll ship back to you the connector and enough screws to secure the other 19 connectors. The danger here is that the threaded hole in the strain relief collars are truly faulty and have not been machined to a size which can be mated with any type of screw. If it's a QA/QC problem then we could be wasting time.
3) You could do a little MacGyver'ing there at JLAB and find a screw which either mates with the strain relief collar or use a slightly longer screw with a nut. I am reluctant to ask this because I know that these pieces are expensive and both CAEN and I expect them to work out of the box. But if time is critical then this might be the fastest was to solve the problem.
I'm sorry. I wish I had a perfect and fast solution to the issue. Please let me know how you'd like to proceed? My cell is 864-356-2606 if you'd like to speak on the phone.
Many thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,
The defective connector, on the left, has the same date code as the good ones. The first 20 connectors we received are the good ones, if that helps.

Hi Aaron and all,
I spoke with the CAEN manager who is responsible for these Radiall parts. Below you'll find a photograph of a 'typical' connector. You'll notice that it has two numbers (in this case 20 37) stamped below the part number. These numbers represent are a code for when the piece was produced.
[cid:part15.9D1CEACC.455BD7CD at setechsales.com]
In the photograph you provided me last week it seemed that there was no such stamp/number set located below the part number...but the picture wasn't totally clear. Is that correct? Would it be possible for you to send me a clear picture of this side of the problematic connector? And count the number of connectors lacking this number?
Our assumption is that you received a bad batch of connectors, and we are hoping that the absence of this number will make it very easy to ID the bad pieces.
Many thanks!
Greg

Hello All,
And here I thought that the new year would bring only good things! :(
I spoke with CAEN about this odd issue. It certainly appears as if Radiall provided CAEN with a batch of clamps that are either the incorrect part or were not manufactured correctly.
We want to get the correct clamp pieces to you as quickly as possible and avoid having to wait for Radiall to deliver more. CAEN will scour their offices to see what we have in-house. It's past hours there now, but I'm anticipating more information from them next Monday. I'll follow up with you when I have it.
I apologize for the issue and promise that we'll get it resolved ASAP.
Many thanks,
Greg

Might be worth trying a few different screws (metric and imperial) from

Mindy, I've looped in Greg.
Hi Greg,
First, Happy New Year!
Please see below the email from Mindy (and attachments) regarding the strain
relief for the Radiall 52-pin connectors.
I wonder if it's possible that the connectors were shipped with the wrong
screws?
That's really the only reason I can think of for this situation.
If anyone else has any ideas...

I have a new issue with the Radiall connectors. The last five connectors I
tried to attach have strain relief screws that won't tighten. I tried one
from a previous order, it tightened properly. The first picture shows the
strain relief attached to a connector. The second picture is a top view of
the strain relief. They look like they're made of different materials, the
old ones are shinier. The last picture is a side by side view, the screw
holes look like the depths are different.
The screws are slightly loose in the holes, even before I try to attach them
to the connector. Poor quality control?
