Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting August 21, 2012
1)	Thia Keppel
a)	News from today?s senior staff meeting
i)	Recent OHSAS audit focused on Hall D. Received nothing but 
compliments and suggestions
ii)	PAC: two members have cycled out and been replaced
iii)	Rolf will be meeting with all staff in the education 
program. He wants to make sure we?re all on track and 
goals are set.
iv)	Dean in education did a survey on how JLab people get 
information about JLab.  1st was all staff memos, 2nd was 
supervisors? last was twitter.
v)	2nd management self-assessment kickoff meeting will be on 
Thursday (8/23)
vi)	Qweak disassembly can be viewed on u-tube.

vii)	JSA Science Council meets next week
viii)	NSAC practice talks will be ongoing over the next 
2 weeks
ix)	Budget scenarios being considered include flat and 
cost-of-living.
(1)	With flat we get 50% of planned research
(2)	With cost-of-living we get 66%
(3)	These imply a schedule impact
x)	Space issues: laser lab is ongoing; SBS has space in the 
EEL high bay area.
b)	Long shutdown work governance document is on the web. Anyone 
working in the Hall during the long shutdown should read and 
sign it.

c)	The ?buddy rule? for work in the Hall has been modified. 
It?s somewhat less restrictive now. See Thia?s memo.

d)	Physics staff meeting Thursday 8/23 at 10:00 in A110
e)	Two useful meetings last week focused on getting everyone 
together making sure we?re on-track, and identifying needed 
resources:
i)	Compton Polarimeter
ii)	Polarized 3He target
2)	Sirish Nanda
a)	Re laser lab space:
i)	Will be moving one floor in the ARC
ii)	Moving from ODU space to JLab space
iii)	Will share with Hall C
b)	Fiber amplifier sent to the factory for repair is back. Will 
start switching out with the one borrowed from the source 
group. Should give higher power.
3)	Doug Higinbotham
a)	Gave colloquium at Kent State last week on Correlations etc.
b)	INT workshop planned for September 2013
c)	Sat on Eli Long?s thesis committee. She passed her defense. 
Good job Eli!
4)	Robin Wines
a)	Møller: 
i)	4th quad will be late. Was due today. Trying to hold them 
to two weeks.
ii)	Collimator plug: Javier says it isn?t needed for 
?12 GeV Upgrade?
b)	DVCS/GMp:
i)	Designing detector mainframe
ii)	Designing exit window cover
c)	Working on BigBite detectors for SBS
d)	SBS:
i)	Iterating on configuration layouts
ii)	Working on magnet coil design
5)	Ed Folts
a)	Working on the Møller shielding box
b)	Thia interjects that Paul Brindza has indicated that the 
septum coils may be useable for PREX as is. Would want to 
run the magnet on the floor to make sure. Triggers some 
discussion of feasibility/desire to do that.
6)	Bert Manzlak
a)	Urges all to check their training records.
i)	Make sure you?re up-to-date
ii)	If there are things there that you don?t need have your 
supervisor remove them.
7)	Alexandre Camsonne
a)	Working on CPU for fastbus
b)	Vertex detector
8)	Bob Michaels
a)	Working on a HAPPEX/PREX transverse asymmetry paper
b)	Also on a NIM paper for PVDIS DAQ
9)	Jian-Ping Chen
a)	Recounts the Polarized 3He target meeting
i)	Evaluated needs of the Hall A & C experiments
ii)	No obvious obstacles to having one target for both 
Halls
b)	Will soon need new lasers
c)	Analysis continues on Transversity, Coulomb Sum Rule, and 
Small Angle GDH
d)	Working on a proceedings and a review paper
10)	Jixie Zhang
a)	Doing simulations for g2p optics
b)	Upgrading HRS Quads and dipole in the geometry
11)	Kalyan Allada
a)	Working on Transversity analysis
i)	Expect to circulate a rough draft to the core group soon.
12)	Ole Hansen
a)	Counting House computers are back up and running in the Hall
i)	Suggests using adaq1 for DAQ (uses Enterprise LINUX 6)
ii)	Adaql10 has been decommissioned (some others taken out 
too)
(1)	Discovered the there was a MYSQL database on 
adaql10. It will be setup again (nothing was lost)
b)	Hall C C++ analyzer adaption is going well
13)	Bogdan Wojtsekhowski
a)	SBS:
i)	Gas Cherenkov Counter conceptual design is completed
(1)	Started working with designers (some sort of 
combined effort between W&M, JLab, and NC A&T 
University)
(2)	Todd Averett will present it tomorrow at the SBS 
weekly meeting
ii)	Preparing documentation for the coordinate detector
b)	SciFi for APEX. Not much happening due to manpower shortage
c)	Septum Coils: recommends making new coils
i)	Needed for APEX
ii)	Will give excellent field quality for PREX
iii)	Discusses proposed modifications
