Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting: October 3, 2017
1. Thia Keppel
a. Senior Staff
i. FY17 budget – we made it!
ii. For FY18 capital carry-on with work 3He continues
iii. Same for research, OPS tight (Careful! Only funded through 12/8 at moment)
iv. Overhead rates will change for next year, 3 categories, totals charged irrespective of #contracts – a
small problem for SoLID (budget will go up a bit!)
v. ~500 hours donated to vacation donation program
vi. The new fiscal year starts…..performance appraisal time!
1. Email will come to activate, do this!
vii. 10/16-20 National Retirement Security week (TIAA, look for webpage)
viii. Test lab crane (Walt Akers)
1. Parts may have to be fabricated for north end crane – may take a month, Hall A to share south end
with SRF
ix. Emergency out, 30 year old breaker, a problem but went not too badly?
x. Physics performance measures (annual), different this year – want quarterly update on research…..should
also be in operations part
xi. 12 GeV is complete!
xii. Yesterday’s sitewide alert to (all national labs) notify supervisors where you were, overall a success
1. Some saw it as a phishing attack – ignored
2. Some saw it as nonsense, ignored
3. Instructions not 100% clear
4. At some level it worked (people talked to each other)
5. People reported in from everywhere
6. Only 8 people missing (Rolf 20 minutes late)
7. No one missing by 3pm

a. SBS
i. Continue on beamline assembly drawings (in checking)
ii. Continue on HCal support platform (in checking)
iii. Integrated ECal into new CAD system and started review of ECal drawings
iv. Completed BB modification drawing package and filed
v. Beamline assembly parts in fabrication
b. PREX/CREX
i. Evaluating septum support structure for additional load (shielding support)
ii. Designing vacuum chambers and vacuum connections
iii. Integrating all experiment components into new CAD system
iv. Collimator in fabrication
c. APEX
i. Checking LCW calculations for septum operation
3. Jessie Butler
a. Continue working with the Cryo Group to finish filling magnets and stabilizing the system after cool down
b. All magnets are currently cold and stable
c. Assembled a laser table in the Test Lab for users to work on Moller Polarimeter
d. The north crane is out of service and they needed to be able to get the truck far enough to reach the
south end crane hook
e. Had a power outage in the hall on Wednesday
i. The main circuit breaker for the emergency generator backed up power went bad so we had to move all
equipment on the circuit to normal house power
ii. Breaker was replaced and emergency power was brought back online Friday afternoon
f. Did more testing with DC Power Group on the welding interference in building 98 and the BSY power supplies
i. Test showed that if equipment moved (welding machine & flow meter control boxes) farther apart, the
interference goes away
g. Hampton University has a tour coming to the hall on Monday, October 9, 2017. Fairly large group. Be
mindful of additional people in hall.
