All this week, National Weather Service forecasts for areas across
eastern Virginia call for daytime temperature and humidity to produce
Heat Index values above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. These are potentially
dangerous conditions, and call for implementing Stage 2 and possibly
Stage 3 severe heat responses listed in ES&H Manual Chapter 6670,
Appendix T1 Heat Stress Work Cessation Procedure at:
http://www.jlab.org/ehs/ehsmanual/6670T1.htm .

Please use caution if working outdoors, in areas without air
conditioning or if conducting strenuous work, and contact Industrial
Hygiene at ext. 6381 for fluid replenishment drinks and to conduct heat
index measurements local to your work environment. Local measurements
can help identify a work/rest regimen that will help you work more
safely in the heat.

Peak temperatures will run from 1-5 p.m. each day. Plan outdoor work for
early morning. Stay indoors with air conditioning whenever feasible. If
working outdoors or in areas not air conditioned:
--Plan adequate rest breaks,
--Wear protective clothing and sun screen and
--Drink plenty of hydrating fluids. Thirst lags behind dehydration.
Drink more than your sense of thirst indicates.

If you engage in lunchtime sports activities (jogging, street hockey,
walking, bicycling, etc.) adjust your activity level and stay well
hydrated. The EH&S Manual calls for lab staff to curtail voluntary
athletic activities when the Heat Index exceeds 93 degrees F.

If you feel ill or begin to experience heat stress symptoms, contact
Occupational Medicine promptly at ext. 7539.

Review heat related work requirements in the ES&H Manual chapter on
Thermal Stress, web link; http://www.jlab.org/ehs/ehsmanual/6670.htm .
