Got it thanks! As a heads up, Joseph will be attending as well.

This Friday should work!

Joseph was able to get p-values for the spectra I sent him, so once we hash out the full infrastructure I will remake the spectra to omit the jitter.

Best,
Emrys

Hi Emrys,

Ok, if next Friday, July 25 works for you, that would be good if you could make about 20 min presentation with potentially 10 min questions,
Then for the collaboration meeting you could prepare more detailed presentation with longer time slot.

The meeting time is 10:am EST, for you it will be 7:00 am.
Please let me know, if this works for you.

Hi Rafo,

I hope you're doing well! I ended up becoming quite ill with a staph infection last week and was out of commission. I have significantly improved, and am just about recovered.

Regarding the September date:
This would be fine, though it might be a good idea for me to have a brief presentation to the collaboration before teh september meeting. I wouldn't want to miss an opportunity for Joseph to work through the majority of the X17 bumphunter pipeline necessary as his summer project. To that end, I have a few questions that can help shape the infrastructure:

  *

  *
Do you have a sample spectrum we can use as a starting place.
     *
I went ahead and made two plots (attached) where I threw a random background using the polynomial from your slides and injected signal above 17MeV and 40 MeV.
        *
We could just use this as a starting place
        *
Note the +- 2 sigma band is somewhat arbitrary and more of a place holder

  *
Do you have a function for the mass resolution? This would be helpful in the signal model and determing appropriate width for gaussian signal model. I am assuming that the signal shpae would be narrower than the mass resolution.

  *
Have you a function for the radiative fraction? This would be for determining coupling after determing upper limits on signal yield.

Let me know if you'd like to zoom 1-1 sometime this week!

Best,
Emrys

Hi Emrys,

no worries, I hope you get fully recovered soon.
Today I discussed this in the general meeting about the best time for you to present.
Next Friday is July 4th, and the week after is CLAS collaboration meeting, where many of X17 members will attend.

I got suggestions that it might be better if you could present this in the coming PRad/X17 collaboration meeting which tentatively will on Sep.12.
I also think that at the collaboration meeting will be better, as you will have dedicated time slot 30-40 minutes (or whatever time you would like) + discussion.
During the weekly meeting as there are other discussion topics as well, there might not be enough time for a proper discussion.

Please let me know, if early Sep (most probably Sep. 12) works for you?

Rafo

Hi Rafo,

Sorry for the delay in responding!

I ended up returning from Texas and immediately testing positive with covid, so I am just now past the worst of the symptoms.

Regarding a presentation: I could do this coming Tuesday at 5:00 PM SLAC Time, if necessary I could also do the general meeting next week.

As a heads up, I have been mentoring Joseph Bailey, an advanced undergraduate student at Stanford, on bumphunting and he would be the one taking lead on developing the X17 bumphunting pipeline as a summer project. As some first steps he has already worked through a pyBumpHunter github repository and has made impressive progress in a short amount of time. Im helping him understand the underlying physics behind the X17 experiment and will guide him through determining coupling strength from a spectrum. Joseph is quite talented and I think offers a good compromise for me to maintain my primary effort on HPS actionables.

As a rough estimate for what I would present at an upcoming meeting:

  *
HPS Primary Bumphunt Methodology
     *
I would describe my resonance search and the tools I have developed with functional forms
  *
HPS Bumphunt using ML Gaussian Process Regression
     *
I would briefly summarize the progress of the two students I have been working with on developng a machine learning bump hunt toolkit
  *
Anticipated X17 Bumphunt workflow and deliverables
     *
I would go through anticipated methodology and timeline for the X17 Bumphunt as I see it
        *
Bkg only
        *
Injected signal scans and upper limits on signal yield
        *
Calculating upper limits on coupling
  *

Thanks so much for this opportunity!

Let me know if next Tuesday or next Friday works best.

Best,
Emrys

Hi Emrys,

no rush at all 🙂 sometime within a month from now would be perfectly fine.
I just realized that our weekly general meeting (analogous of HPS Wednesday meeting) might be too early for you. We meet on Fridays 10:00 am EST, which is 7:00 am for you.

We also meet on Monday's or Tuesday's at 20:00 (EST) to discuss more analysis/simulations staff, this is 17:00 SLAC time.
Perhaps the the 2nd option would work better for you.

Again no urgency in this,
for example if July 1st (Tuesday) 20:00 (17:00 SLAC time) works for you it potentially can be a good time.
Otherwise let me know which day you prefer.
I will check with the meeting organizer as well, to make sure there are not many other items in the agenda for that day.

Hi Rafo!

Thanks for following up.

I agree that my HPS bump hunt takes priority. However, as I am solely focused on bumphunting using a few different approaches, I believe my experience will translate into a clean X17 Bumphunt.

I would be happy to give a presentation at an X17 weekly meeting. I am traveling to Texas next week to visit my grandfather, but perhaps I could present the following week? If that is too late, maybe late next week depending on when the weekly meetings are. Let me know what would work best.

Best,
Emrys

Hi Emrys,

Thanks again for offering to help with BumpHunting on X17 experiment.
I Just would like to mention again that we don't want you to get distracted from your main duties at HPS, and it is fine with your supervisor.

Given this, perhaps as a first step would be to give a presentation in one of weekly X17 meetings about your BumpHunting technique, and get introduced to the collaboration.

Please let me know, if this works for you.

Rafo
