Precision Electroweak Physics with Parity Violation at Jefferson Lab
Donald Jones, Assistant Professor of Physics, Temple University
Since its discovery in 1956, parity violation has become a key tool for probing nuclear and nucleonic structure. The signature of parity violation is that an experiment and its mirror "twin" see different physics i.e. measure different results. Over the past decade Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA, has maintained a vigorous parity-violating physics program using this weak force signature. Parity-violation experiments have developed a reputation for their increasingly rigorous demands on measurement precision and on electron beam quality. The parity program is now at the level of precision where it has begun testing key predictions of the Standard Model. I will talk about 3 parity experiments in Hall A at Jefferson Lab, two complete and one in the near future, with motivations reaching from astrophysics to Standard Model verification.
