Environmental Program Recognized
Jefferson Lab has been recognized as an Exemplary Environmental Enterprise facility by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. Read more here .
THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
The hadronic-vacuum-polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment has been calculated for the first time in lattice QCD to second-order in the electromagnetic coupling. The calculation employs previously published results for the Taylor coefficients of the renormalized vacuum polarization function, obtained on four-flavor QCD gauge-field configurations with physical light-quark masses. The total uncertainty is found to be below the target precision of the "Muon g-2 Experiment" at Fermilab.
ESH&Q
Take Steps to Avoid Injury While Walking
We are rarely more vulnerable than when we are walking. We are all pedestrians from time to time - crossing busy streets and negotiating traffic can be hazardous. It is important to pay attention to what is going on around us. The National Safety Council recommends “Heads Up, Phones Down” when walking. Distracted walking incidents are on the rise, and everyone with a cell phone is at risk. According to a Governors Highway Safety Association report, there were nearly 6,000 pedestrian fatalities in 2017. We are losing focus on our surroundings and putting our safety – and the safety of others – at risk. The solution: Stop using phones while walking, and not just in crosswalks and intersections. Over half of distracted walking injuries occur in our own homes, proving that we need to stay aware of our surroundings, wherever we are.

IT Division Maintenance Set for Tuesday, July 17 , 5-10 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a maintenance period on Tuesday, July 17 , 5-10 p.m. During this time, the switch on the second floor of the Halls A, B and C Counting Houses will be replaced. While the switch is down, the JLAB network, including phones and wireless, will be down in the following buildings: 72, 92, 95, 96b, 97, 98 and 102. The ACC and Hall networks will be unaffected, though. In addition, updates will be released for all Linux and Windows desktops and servers. Overnight, central servers will be rebooted to finalize these updates. During the system reboots, individual services will be unavailable for around 10 minutes. Finally, plan on rebooting your Linux or Windows desktop to finalize the updates no later than close of business on Friday, July 20 . If you have any questions or concerns about these updates, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.
Jefferson Lab Computer User Account Audit
On Monday, July 16 , the Jefferson Lab IT Division will start the annual computer user account audit. Jefferson Lab Supervisors and Sponsors of staff, Users and contractors with lab computer accounts are required to review and re-authorize computer user accounts. This audit must be completed by close of business Friday , Aug. 17. Once the audit begins, the IT Division will send emails to Jefferson Lab Supervisors and Sponsors with instructions on completing their audit. This audit is a critical part of maintaining an appropriate level of cyber security at the lab. Note: Supervisors will not be required to audit accounts for 'Active' staff members. This will mean that some Supervisors will not need to participate in the audit this year. If you have any questions about the audit, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.
